Friday 7 - Friday 14 July 2017

Every year the International Byron Festival takes place in Hucknall and Newstead Abbey to celebrate the life of poet Lord Byron.

This ever-popular annual festival features a variety of activities to suit all ages and interests in and around Hucknall.

There is definitely something for all the family with many events and activities being free of charge:

Friday 7 July:

The Byron Friday Market & Craft Fair | Market Place Hucknall from 10am-4pm

Join in the fun with Paul Temple and Monty the Monkey who will entertain you with his Barrel Organ whilst you browse the many stalls and shop.

The Murder of Lord Byron | John Godber Centre from 8pm

A murder mystery drama. Can you help the Regency Coroner work out which of our four suspects shot young Lord Byron dead? Hear the evidence and then you decide. A cash bar will be open.

Tickets £3 on the door.

Saturday 8 July:

Annual History Day ‘Hucknall Celebrates’ | Hucknall Market Place from 10am – 3pm

Hucknall Heritage Society would like to share with you the celebrations and festivities of bygone years. The Family History Group will be there to help you with your family tree. FREE

Venetian Mask Making | Hucknall Library from 10am-12noon & 2pm-4pm

A FREE event for children and families. Come along and help Gordon McLellan to make you a Venetian Mask.

Old Haunts | George Street Working Men’s Club from 7pm

A spine tingly thriller by Don’t Go in the Cellar Theatre Company

Classic Scooters and Classic Cars | Meet at Hucknall Market Place

Vehicles will assemble between 8.30am-10.30am at Hucknall Market Place to drive to Newstead Abbey in convoy (arriving at 11am). Vehicles will be on display at Newstead Abbey for the rest of the day. Other attractions include live bands, beer tent, ice creams, café open all day. A FREE shuttle bus will run between Hucknall Market Place at Newstead Abbey every hour throughout the day. The last bus will leave Hucknall at 4pm with the last bus leaving Newstead Abbey at 5pm.

An Evening of Italian Food | Bella Mia Restaurant

Tuesday 11 July:

Help Us Find the Black Friar | Newstead Abbey

A spine chilling evening looking over Byron’s old haunts. A bus will pick you up at Hucknall tram terminus at 6.30pm to travel to Newstead Abbey. The bus will return to the tram terminus after the event. Unsuitable for children under 14. All enquiries to or 01636 813818.

Cost £20 including a glass of wine and bus travel

Sponsored Swim | Hucknall Leisure Centre

The Hucknall & Linby Dolphins Swimming Club will be undertaking a sponsored two mile challenge which is the same as swimming the length of the Grand Canal. In aid of Notts & Lincs Air Ambulance. Plenty of spectator viewing, come along and give them your support.

Wednesday 12 July:

Afternoon Tea at Beauvale Priory | Between 2-5pm

Come along and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea at one of Byron’s favourite beauty spots. £10 per person – includes a tour of the ruins. Tickets available from the John Godber Centre.

Cheese & Wine Evening | Station Hotel Hucknall from 7pm

A cheese and wine evening to sample the delights of Italy with live entertainment. Tickets £5 per person available from the Station Hotel or on the door. Tickets include your first glass of wine.

Thursday 13 July:

Have You Seen The Black Friar | Newstead Abbey

Friday 14 July:

Heritage Bus Tour | Between 9.30am – 1pm

Pick up the FREE bus tour in the car park at the rear of the John Godber Centre. The tour will take you to the grounds of Newstead Abbey then on to All Saints Church, Annesley and finally a visit to Annesley Old Church. A buffet lunch will be served in the John Godber Centre from 1-2pm. Lunch is £6 per person. Booking is essential – or 0115 9638566

Music In Quiet Places | St Mary Magdalene Church from 2pm

Enjoy an afternoon of relaxing music with Tony Herrod at the church organ with music by Highly Strung and poetry readings by Becky Cullen. Tea and biscuits during the interval. FREE admission.

Newstead Brass Band | John Godber Centre from 7.30pm

The award winning Newstead Brass Band will finish the week’s festival with a musical extravaganza at the John Godber. During the evening there will be an awards ceremony to present winners of the poetry, arts and photography competitions with their prizes. Tickets £5 in advance or £6 on the door.
