New Surrealism: ‘Dark Matter’ - An exhibition by Maximillion

New Surrealism – ‘Dark Matter’ : A free exhibition by the artist Maximillion
The Malt Cross
Saturday 11th November 2017 | Midday

“An exploration of this history of surrealism with a contemporary twist!”

The exhibition ‘Dark Matter’ draws together a collection of over 20 giclee digital art prints, from the original artwork of New Surrealist Maximillion. This is Maximillion’s first solo show in the UK for 31 years, and features the newly discovered technique of ‘transient’ collage.

The imagery used in these hauntingly beautiful prints, ranges from18th century French portraiture to 1940’s and 50’s film stars and pin-up girls.

Some works feature pop portraits reminiscent of Warhol’s, and though featuring embellishments of gold and copper foil, do not explore notions of celebrity, but instead offer the viewer a vision of unknown beings glimpsed in another realm. In these pictures bodies and faces are often obscured and distorted, sometimes by masks, found objects, tricks of light and a frequent motif of a spiral snail shell. Some figures have insect heads suggesting a Kafkaesque metamorphosis, provoking a sense of unease.

With this work Maximillion carries the torch of surrealism into the 21st century, a time traveller in a dark cave. The light illuminates the bones of a dream. It’s new and unknown. Enter the world of dreams with New Surrealism! – Come along to the show!

Opening night featuring a band lineup curated by I’m Not From London! Begins 8.30pm

“The Hijinks play dreamy psych rock kickstarting this evening in style.”

“Musically, it’s where post-punk meets shoegaze, although the keyboards, guitar effect and reverbed vocals give it a sprinkling of psychedelia as well.”

“Luna Rosa are an Alternative/Psych/Indie four piece hailing from Corby, Northamptonshire. With drums and bass that shake the cranium, guitars that wail like a banshee, anthemic lyrics that will have the masses bellowing from the utmost top of their lungs as they are forced to move by the wall of sound that now induces them. Brash and raucous scenes held on a plethora of euphoria, Luna Rosa have taken to the stage”

Formed in 2015, Luna Rosa have played up and down the UK racking up over 200 gigs in two years, including headline and festival slots. Their Live shows are brash, exciting and raucous. Grabbing the crowd from the off and not letting them go. The release of Luna Rosa’s first E.P in November 2015 brought an array of reviews, sessions and much bigger gigs. In 2016 the single from the E.P “This One (High On The Groove)” was played on over 50 nationwide radio stations, including BBC Introducing and BBC 6. It also gained airplay in Europe and America. 2017 continues in the same vein, their gigs continue to impress as do the sign of new recordings.
