Armed Forces Weekend 2017

Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 June 2017

There are hundreds of events taking place to celebrate Armed Forces Day across the country - within Nottingahmshire the following events are taking place:

Saturday 24 June:

West Bridgford - Armed Forces Day Proms in the Park - Bridgford Park from 12noon - 9pm

Rushcliffe Borough Council marks Armed Forces Day with an annual ‘Proms in the Park’ concert and family fun day in Bridgford Park, West Bridgford. There’ll be performances throughout the day from local singers and bands including Nottinghamshire singer Lily Taylor Ward and the Nottinghamshire Police Band, leading up to our ‘last night of the proms’ concert at 7pm with Nottingham Concert Band. Proms is not just about the music though as we’ll also have lots of great displays from local community groups as well as free have-a-go sports activities to keep younger audience members occupied. ‌Around the park there will also be lots of family friendly attractions including fairground rides and garden games. A licensed bar and various food outlets will on site or you are welcome to bring your own picnic.

Rushcliffe Borough Council are delighted to announce our official charity for this year’s Armed Forces Days Proms in the Park is the Defence National Rehabilitation Centre, a £300 million facility opening in 2018 at Stanford Hall in Stanford on Soar. Kirkby in Ashfield - Armed Forces 40s to 00s - Ashfield Precinct from 10am - 6pm

Armed Forces Day Service from 10am – 12 Noon, Followed by a celebration of dance and music from the 1940’s to 2000’s until 8pm. A chance for the community to come together to celebrate Armed Forces Day. Will include music, dance and art items by community groups and individuals and also professional bands.
We want the community to get actively involved in the event, bringing a ‘buzz’ to the town centre. In the past this has just been a small Armed Forces event. However, by combining it with an Active Ashfield event we hope to attract a larger audience to show their respect for the Armed Forces and get involved in the activities and entertainment we will provide throughout the day and into the evening.

Sunday 25 June:

Mansfield Armed Forces Day - Mansfield Market Place from 10am - 3pm

A celebration event to give and thanks to all the Armed Forces within the Mansfield area, but to also raise awareness of the different groups and show support for them, whilst encouraging interaction between all ages and communities. The event is to be fun to encourage a party atmosphere but also showcasing the battles fought over the many years and demonstrating what support is available to ex-service personnel within our community.

The overall theme of our event is a thanks and celebration party, with an element of education and interaction.  Throughout the day members of the public will be invited to join our British summer time tea and cake street party to celebrate all the heroes who have fought in conflicts over the many decades. We will dress the town Market place in a traditional British summer time street party with long tables, bunting and Armed Forces Day flags. All party goers will receive a free tea/coffee and cupcake (with the Armed Forces Day flag on), in return for a voucher which will be available for download from the town centre website.

To provide background entertainment, we will have an outdoor pianist playing all the favourite British war time songs from the decades, and a themed singer to join-in.

This will set the party and celebration atmosphere, however the event will be much more. Due to previous events we have run, we have many contacts for the various Armed Forces groups and Cadets.  We are also working closely with the new Allied Forces Support Service store that has opened in the town centre. All of these groups will have a market stall in the market place showcasing their service and various wartime paraphernalia. For example the local Army store will use the opportunity to encourage enrolment; the Allied Forces store will use the opportunity to showcase what support is on offer for ex-Forces personnel and the Cadets will demonstrate how the younger generation can get involved.

We will also have groups who will bring old war time paraphernalia to show.  We will use an event company to bring armed forces themed children’s events such as bomb detection and assault courses, along with replica Army vehicles

We will also be making a ‘Thank-you’ story board. As part of an existing ‘I Love Mansfield’ project we run, we have a giant ‘heart’ board and often ask people to complete heart-shaped Post-it notes stating why they love Mansfield. Now we will be asking people to leave notes of thanks and support to all Armed Forces personnel. These will be read out live throughout the day on the local radio station and the following week, some will be selected to be printed in our local news paper.

Newark Armed Forces Day - Newark Town Hall & Market Place from 10.45am- 10pm

The evening event will be 1940s style music, with dancing and a bar, in the grounds of Newark Castle.
