Valentine's Day
When it comes to the message of love, Nottinghamshire is the perfect place for a romantic experience on Valentine’s Day. Our links to romance date as far back as Robin Hood and Maid Marian and there will always be something for lovers here.
For a great Valentine’s Day idea, why not head to Edwinstowe and visit St Mary’s Church, the place where Robin Hood and Maid Marian were married? There’s a statue in the town of Robin with his beloved and with great free attractions like Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre it makes for an excellent low cost Valentine’s Day option. You could also try lunch at somewhere like Launay’s Restaurant for a romantic treat too.
Moving on from medieval times, the great Romantic poet Lord Byron started out from his ancestral home in Nottinghamshire, Newstead Abbey. You can visit the beautiful gardens and experience the scenic landscape that inspired him. Newstead is a truly wonderful place for a stroll with a loved one.
Taking up the tradition of Nottinghamshire’s great romantics in the twentieth century was the controversial novelist DH Lawrence. His birthplace and heritage museum in Eastwood is an excellent place to visit as an introduction to the writer of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Sons and Lovers. Lawrence took his inspiration for his novels from the surrounding countryside, take the Blue Line Trail to find out more.
