Gotham is a village in south west Nottinghamshire near Long Eaton. It is famed for giving it's name to the fictional setting for the Batman stories in DC Comics. In the 1200s, residents of the village feigned insanity by painting green apples red, trying to drown an eel and pouring water into a bottomless tub.
Insanity was thought to be contageous and the deliberately eccentric behaviour prevented King John passing through the town. This stopped the town being given the status of a public highway, something the residents wanted to avoid.
