Henry Ireton was one of the most senior Parliamentarians in both military and political matters. He was born in this sleepy village. To the west of the village church stands Ireton House which today incorporates the 17th century building once owned by his family. Ireton was a fearless fighter, fighting with distinction at Edgehill and Marston Moor. In 1646 he was marries to Bridget, the eldest daughter of Oliver Cromwell to who he was fiercely loyal and for whom he went to Ireland to fight, dying finally of swamp fever there in 1651.
Attenborough Church, once used to stable Cromwell's horses is kept locked and may only be visited during services on Sundays. Ireton House is a private residence and is not open to the public.
