History & Heritage

Discover the history and heritage of Nottinghamshire, from the soon to open National Civil War Centre in Newark, to The Grand Tour – a celebration of heritage and culture across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Nottinghamshire has a rich and varied history, with many unexpected delights just waiting to be discovered. Did you know we have Ice Age art in the caves at Creswell Crags? Or a perfectly preserved snapshot of a typical 1920s home at Mr Straw’s House in Worksop? Or that the magnificent Elizabethan mansion Wollaton Hall featured as Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises? Come along and be surprised by our intriguing past.

Experience fun and engaging heritage at the National Justice Museum and City of Caves - where you can buy a great value joint ticket. Visit the Malt Cross, one of few remaining Victorian music halls in the country and the largest one outside of London. Explore the pretty village of Edwinstowe, supposedly the place where Robin Hood and Maid Marian tied the knot. Venture into Laxton, the only village in England that still operates traditional open field farming.

There are lots of opportunities to take the family out for the day to experience something totally new. With a whole host of trails around the city and county, exploring our heritage doesn't have to cost the earth!
