History & Heritage

Discover fascinating history and heritage of Nottinghamshire at some of our brilliant attractions, museums, stately homes and historical venues.

From the city’s plethora of hand carved caves, to the legend of Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest, and The Dukeries in the north of the county, Nottinghamshire has a rich and varied history, with many unexpected delights waiting to be discovered.

For example, did you know we have the UK’s only Ice Age art in the ancient caves at Creswell Crags? Or that the magnificent Elizabethan mansion Wollaton Hall featured as Wayne Manor in Batman's The Dark Knight Rises?

Head over to Newark, a market town which played a key role in England’s Civil War, where you can explore Newark Castle and the UK’s only museum dedicated to this tumultuous period, The National Civil War Centre.

Experience the darker side of Nottingham’s history at the 800 year old gaol and courthouse The National Justice Museum and get a joint ticket to explore Nottingham’s underground history at City of Caves.

Relax at the gorgeous Malt Cross, one of few remaining Victorian music halls in the country where you can enjoy live music, creative workshops, or even a gin tasting deep in their caves.

Discover the city’s famous figures and literary heroes at DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum, Lord Byron’s ancestral seat Newstead Abbey, or The William Booth Birthplace Museum which is dedicated to the founder of The Salvation Army.

Explore the pretty village of Edwinstowe, supposedly the place where Robin Hood and Maid Marian tied the knot, or venture a little further north to find Mr Straw’s House, a perfectly preserved snapshot of a typical 1920s home in Worksop.

There are lots of opportunities to take the family out for the day to delve into Nottingham’s intriguing past and experience something totally new. Plus, with a whole host of heritage trails around the city and county, exploring Nottinghamshire’s history doesn't have to cost the earth!
