February Half Term Holidays

The February half term offers a series of challenges. It’s usually cold outside and the thought of spending a family day out at an attraction seems fraught with possible pitfalls.

If you decide to go away for the week, you’re still met with similar challenges, so here’s our guide of things to do if you're spending the winter half term in Nottinghamshire.

Explore our market towns

The best way to try and get out and about in the cold weather is to visit one of our excellent market towns. A popular choice is Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire, located only a stone’s throw from Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve. You’ll find Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre for local artists showcasing anything from swords to fossils. Also venture into town for great local produce and maybe have lunch at Launay’s restaurant.

Highly recommended is the town of Southwell with Southwell Minster at its heart and Newark, famed for its involvement in the Civil War. Newark Castle is a terrific sight in the centre of Newark and follow the Civil War Trail around the town to find out about it’s intriguing heritage.

Half Term Activities

Superb activities at this time of year include swimming at Water Meadows in Mansfield. This fantastic fun pool offers three slides, wave machine and beach area, while there is also a 25 meter competition pool for the capable swimmer.

Just around the corner is Making it! Discovery Centre which tasks school age children to get creative and design their own product from scratch. In doing so, you’ll learn all about the manufacturing process from beginning right through to prototype and production.

In Nottingham, the Galleries of Justice Museum will offer performance tours of the former gaol. The big news though is that It’s sister attraction, the City of Caves will reopen again after almost a year and you’ll be able to get underneath the city and see how the caves were used - from Anglo Saxon times to their use as air raid shelters in World War II.

Take part in fun activities with Mr Straw's House at Worksop Library and explore strange items from the National Trust property on Wednesday 15 February.

Enhance Your Cultural Experience

If you head to some of our excellent indoor cultural attractions you’ll open your mind to some enthralling experiences. Nottingham Contemporary is always a great place to visit because the art isn’t just about paintings and it’s totally free. You’ll often find anything from digital film projections to huge wind chimes hung internally and even windscreen wipers on its windows.

Across the city, at Nottingham Castle, there’s an exhibition by Anish Kapoor, the famous artist behind the Sky Mirror which has previously found its way to New York and St Petersburg. There is plenty of other art on show too and you can take a tour of the caves or enjoy the magnificent views from the castle terrace.

For literature lovers, there are family friendly tours of the DH Lawrence Heritage Centre where you can find out about the inspiration behind one of the 20th Century’s most controversial novelist. It also provides an excellent insight into Victorian mining family life.

Snowdrops at Hodsock PrioryIn the very north of the county, Hodsock Priory opens its doors to visitors for the 21st Anniversary Snowdrops. The woodland around this majestic historic house becomes a beautiful bed of white flowers and is well worth a visit.

Be Entertained

If it’s too cold for any of these options, then why not snuggle up at Broadway and catch a film? It’s one of the top independent cinemas in the country and regularly shows unique films that you may not be able to catch anywhere else.

Lakeside Arts Centre are also hosting a novel puppet performance of Goldilocks so this is a great way to treat the children to a matinee performance during the half term holidays in February.

At Nottingham Playhouse, Science Museum Live is a show with demonstrations and experiments that is designed to challenge and inspire young people.
