St Peter's Church Clayworth

St Peters is home to the largest single work of art in the East of England. The Traquair Murals created by Scottish artist Phoebe Anna Traquair (1852-1936) cover all four walls of the chancel and are visually spectacular.

The historic village of Clayworth lies along a stretch of the Roman road from Lincoln to Doncaster close to the Chesterfield canal. St.Peters is recognised as one of Nottinghamshire's finest churches and visitors are invited to explore the church's architectural heritage dating back to pre-Conquest and Saxon times, as well as the ornate painted ceilings and stained-glass windows.

Most of the windows in the church date from the 14th century, and many are enhanced by modern glass. Saints, prophets and angels making a fine gallery, others showing Christ giving the keys to Peter, the Annunciation and the Nativity. The tower has a Jesse window, and in the main east window above the altar are scenes of Our Lord washing the feet of the Disciples, Peter leaving the Judgement Hall, Gethsemene with the disciples sleeping, and the Crucifixion.

This beautiful church was built between 1150 and 1180 and is situated on the main street which runs through this charming north Nottinghamshire canalside village, 6 miles north of Retford.  It is a Grade I listed building and is regarded as one of the finest village churches in the county.

It is home to the Traquair Murals, the largest work of art in the East of England, painted in 1904/5. The church also features a fine 13th century stone screen - a rare possession in a village church, and the Elizabethan Fitzwilliam tomb, one of the earliest examples of decorative plasterwork in the country.  A visit is highly recommended - we are open all day, every day to welcome you.

For those from outside the area, the nearest railway station is Retford, on the East Coast mainline (London-Edinburgh). It is also just 5 miles from the A1 and not far from the M1 and M18 and cross Pennine routes. The nearest airport is Doncaster Robin Hood.
