First centre in the UK to tell the story of the British Civil Wars
It was Britain's deadliest conflict and one which shaped our modern world. Discover why brother fought brother and father fought against son and how a once all-powerful monarch lost his kingdom and his head.
The UK's first National Civil War Centre is here, aiming to telling the story of the brutal 17th century clash between Crown and Parliament in compelling new detail.
The British Civil Wars were fought across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland from 1638 to 1652. Newark, held by the Royalists, played a major role, undergoing three sieges. The last of these in 1645-46 caused terrible suffering.
Historians have gained a unique insight into the town's experience with the discovery of a treasure trove of previously unexamined papers in local archives. Period invoices, petitions, accounts and records reveal how ordinary people coped with being caught in the cross-fire between Cavalier and Roundhead. This amazing new material will be used together with state-of-the-art technology and hundreds of previously unseen relics to create a unique museum experience.
What do we have to offer?
At the National Civil War centre we delve into the British Civil War in our fantastic galleries, enabling you to experience what life was like during the Civil War. You can find tons of information from our interactive information points and watch our films highlighting some of the many events that happened here in Newark.
You can also enjoy our exhibition Battle-Scarred and learn about surgeons who could remove a bladder stone in 50 seconds, military hospitals run with stern hygiene standards and a complex system of war pensions for the maimed, widowed and orphaned. Hardly sounds like the mid-17th century, but a new exhibition on medicine and welfare in the British Civil Wars will open eyes on what experts believe was a ground-breaking period.
You can complete your visit in our new café Nineteen20. Open 7 days a week, Nineteen20 is perfect for a morning cup of our own unique blend of coffee from Forge Roasters in Sheffield, a freshly prepared lunchtime panini, or an afternoon cake.
Enjoy refreshments in our stunning, newly refurbished, surroundings or relax outside in our continental courtyard; ideal for those visiting the Centre.
