Ancestral Attractions

Getting out and about - museums and visitor attractions

X/PR/13/3: Nisi Prius Court, Shire Hall, Nottingham, 1879 courtesy of Nottinghamshire ArchivesAs you do your ancestral research you’ll learn things about your ancestors including the places they lived and perhaps the occupations they had.

Perhaps they worked in one of the coal mines that Nottinghamshire is famous for. They might have worked in the hosiery industry, in a cotton mill or as a lace-maker.

Did they help build the networks of railways and canals that supported the county’s prosperity in the industrial revolution? Check out the nottsheritagegateway website for further information about Nottinghamshire’s industrial heritage.

Museums and heritage attractions are an ideal way of finding out more, and you’ll find your visits to them much more satisfying when you have particular questions in mind. Search our web site for museums and other attractions in your area of interest.

Our literary heritage, too, especially DH Lawrence and Lord Byron, is worth exploring to understand Nottinghamshire and its people.
