Adams & Page Building

The Adams & Page Building dates back to 10th July 1855 and sits proudly as the largest building in the Lace Market district of Nottingham City Centre.

It was once a lace warehouse and showroom when Nottingham was at the heart of lace production around the globe. The Adams Building is instantly striking, with its grand exterior, marvelous design and foreboding entrance and windows. The design represented its importance in the city and it was once at the centre of Nottinghams industrial revolution during the 19th century.

The building is named after Thomas Adams who was a famous quaker and industrialist in the 19th century. The design of the building owes itself to famous architect T.C. Hine, who adopted an 'anglo-Italian' style for large parts of it, with several phases of construction taking place from 1854 - 74.

Thomas Adams was considered a humane employer in his day, with the original building incorporating a chapel in the basement, indoor toilets, wash facilities and tea rooms. As a lace warehouse and showroom, much of the lace housed here was manufactured in outlying factories and then transported to the Adams Building to be finished and sold.

Today, the building is Grade II listed and forms part of the Nottingham College campus. Please note that the building is not open to the public, you can however admire its glory from the outside.

You can find out more about the Adams & Page building as well as much more on Nottingham's Lace Market on the Lace Market Heritage Audio Tour.
